The Value of Paying Attention
What is attention economy, and what does it mean for learners?
Picture a learner sitting in a lecture. The professor is mid-explanation of something genuinely important. And somewhere during the class, without any deliberate decision, that learner's mind has left the building. Not because they stopped caring. Not because the content was bad. Just because something, a notification, a worry, a half-formed thought, found the gap and slipped in.
By the time they notice, several minutes have passed, and now they're trying to reconstruct a thread they missed.
This is not a character flaw. And it's not a discipline problem. It's often what happens when a learner's attention, which is finite and human, meets an environment that has become exceptionally good at competing for it.
What is The Attention Economy?
The term "attention economy" gets used a lot, sometimes loosely. What it means: many of the platforms and apps that are ever-present for most of our waking hours operate within an economic structure where attention is scarce, engagement can be measured, and user activity is monetized through advertising, data, or subscriptions. Features like notifications, autoplay, infinite scroll, and personalised recommendations are designed to increase return visits and time spent on a platform. Their design objectives prioritise engagement and revenue, not the last impact…like whether a learner can follow a lecture the next morning.
Herbert Simon, the economist and cognitive scientist, identified the underlying problem decades before any of this existed. He wrote that a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention. That was before smartphones, before social media, before the infrastructure that now sits between a learner and their ability to concentrate.
Gloria Mark and her colleagues at UC Irvine have spent years observing how information workers switch among screen-based activities. She's reported approximate averages of two and a half minutes on a screen in early 2000s observations, 75 seconds in 2012, and 47 seconds in more recent work. Worth naming clearly: these are study-specific switching measures from particular workplace contexts, not a universal measure of how long any human can concentrate. (A person can switch screens frequently and still be capable of sustained focus under different conditions.) What the research does point toward is that observed patterns of screen-based attention have shifted considerably, and that's worth sitting with when we're thinking about the environments learners are trying to do hard cognitive work in.
There's another number that circulates a lot in this conversation: the claim that after an interruption, it takes 25 minutes to refocus. This one needs a small note, as it gets a bit messy. What the original workplace study actually measured was how long workers took to return to an interrupted project, not how long it took them to fully regain concentration. They were doing other things in between; and it was a workplace study, not a classroom one. The underlying insight-offering still holds though: an interruption can consume a significant portion of a class period, especially when a learner has to reconstruct where the thread was before they drifted.
Attention Economies Impact on Learners
Attention generally increases the likelihood that information gets selected for processing, for doing-something-with, and for later learning. When it's diverted or derailed, less of what's being explained tends to get encoded in a way the learner can actually use later. You can't reliably learn complex material that never receives meaningful attention. That's not a metaphor, it's how thinking and sense-making and integrating actually work. When attention is pulled away mid-explanation, the information may not get encoded adequately in that moment, which means more reconstruction later.
Attention isn't the whole picture of learning, after all. Motivation matters, and so do sleep, prior knowledge, retrieval practice, and a dozen other things. But it is a necessary starting point, and one worth protecting.
Using Your Attention for Good
The standard response to all of this tends to be some version of: “try harder.” Be more disciplined. Put your phone in another room. Use this app to block those other apps.
Some of that is practical, genuinely. I’m all about systems, as you know. But advice that places the entire responsibility on individual self-control asks learners to out-discipline some of the most sophisticated engagement-design ever built, and tends to generate a lot of shame when it doesn't work, which it often doesn't, for entirely understandable reasons.
What I'd rather talk about is protecting your attention not as an act of discipline, but as an act of self-determination. A learner who understands what their attention is, why it matters, who is competing for it, and what it costs when it's fragmented, is a learner who can make actual choices about it. Not perfect choices, not heroic ones, just informed ones. That's a fundamentally different relationship with focus than "try harder."
Try it Yourself
One small thing worth trying. Research on implementation intentions, which are specific if-then plans for goal pursuit, finds that they tend to improve follow-through compared to vague intentions alone. So instead of resolving to “focus better,” try something more concrete before you sit down to study: "If I sit down at seven o'clock, then I'll put my phone in another room and work through these notes for twenty-five minutes."
Specificity matters. The if-then gives your brain a cue to act on rather than a virtue to perform. It's a small practice inspired by that research, not a guarantee, but a kinder and more grounded starting point than willpower alone.
Attention is the resource that makes learning possible. It's finite, and it's yours. Understanding that it's being competed for, and by whom, and why, is the beginning of something more useful than discipline.
